NTT Silicon Valley SV1 Data Center

Santa Clara, California USA

Subtly Seismic

This new world-class four-story data center is strategically located in the heart of the tech capital of the world, and is the first in the area to use an earthquake-resistant design featuring an innovative base isolation system. Ombrae Studios worked in collaboration with Gensler to create a subtle artwork design that speaks to the seismic stabilization of the building with waveform gradient.

DESIGN OPPORTUNITY

Design to Budget

Further adding to the visual interest of the façade is a material transition with full Ombrae panels as the base, which gradually deletes randomized OpticalTiles™ (pixels) leaving more perforated holes towards the upper area. The top two panel rows are fully perforated panel with no Ombrae. This provided some cost savings to the project while maintaining an integrated design, with a digitized aesthetic highlighting the unique earth-quake proof benefits of the building's internal structure. Lastly, all the backing wall and substructure are painted in the client's spot light blue color. From certain viewing angles, more through-views are evident, revealing this blue tone from behind.
