One of the first commercial towers to be built in the downtown core in nearly three decades, Edmonton Tower rises 27 floors, and is situated at the heart of this new vibrant urban centre, ICE District⏤one of Canada’s largest mixed-use developments. Designed by Stantec, the tower is anchored by a three story-podium and a bold, double-height lobby accentuated by a glass box, with Ombrae feature walls on both the north and south elevations. To capture the energy of the sports and entertainment district, we collaborated with DDB Edmonton in the creation of expressive artwork that reflects the energy and spirit of the area.

DESIGN OPPORTUNITY
Given the hockey-centric focus of the district, located steps away from the Edmonton Oilers NHL hockey stadium, the artwork was created by DDB Edmonton that reflected the sport's dynamic energy in a creative way. By adding strip LED lights to a hockey stick, long exposure photography of a player taking a slapshot resulted in imagery with lots of visual interest when realized in the Ombrae panels. We collaborated with them by optimizing the artwork for key viewing angles, and maximizing the perception of movement in the artwork.
FINAL SIGN-OFF
Our manufacturing partner Keith Panel Systems created a full-scale mockup to validate the final artwork under real-world natural lighting conditions. A detailed crop was chosen, validating both the high-contrast slapshot area, and the subtlety of the player's face in the background for the project stakeholders to approve. Utilizing two turret punches, they fabricated the panels over three months: 626 panels with over 800,000 OpticalTiles™ individually indexed and punched. The final panels were finished in a clear anodized coating, shipped, and installed on site.
